A STITCH IN TIME

Installation, Experiment, Embroidery, Mixed Media

Is there a connection between pop culture and embroidery?

a stitch in time

Can femininity interwoven with tradition and stereotypes transform itself into liberating, modern art?

Is a hand stitched type font capable of rewriting the effectiveness of typography?

“A Stitch in Time” changes the context, rekindles memories, and invites the audience to explore how traditional patterns can be juxtaposed with contemporary images. It travels back in time, links the present with the past, redefines values and resets emotions.

Kanella’s second solo exhibition features a non-traditional mix-and-match of embroidery techniques and materials. The artist’s experimental, humorous and pop art approach introduces a new way to appreciate needlework as paper, metal, paint, and ink make an unusual crossover to the world of embroidery.

The installation was inspired by a game of chess that resulted in a draw between Garry Kasparov and 13-year-old Magnus Carlsen. Frames of princes and princesses are strategically positioned matching the final setup of the pawns. It is an artistic representation of the battle of the sexes, which very often has no winner or loser, as both sides could be losing or winning at the same time.
